Steve "Mongo" McMichael, a former NFL standout who transitioned into professional wrestling, died April 23, 2025, at age 67 after a prolonged battle with ALS. While McMichael achieved significant success in football, including a Super Bowl win with the Chicago Bears and a Pro Football Hall of Fame induction in 2024, his post-NFL career in World Championship Wrestling (WCW) left a lasting impression on the wrestling world.
McMichael joined WCW in 1995, initially serving as a color commentator before stepping into the ring. He became a member of the Four Horsemen, a prominent wrestling faction led by Ric Flair. In 1997, McMichael captured the WCW United States Heavyweight Championship, marking the pinnacle of his wrestling tenure.
Ric Flair paid tribute to his former teammate, stating, “The world just lost the incredible Steve ‘Mongo’ McMichael! He was my best friend through it all! An amazing athlete and human being! I have the fondest memories working with him, and this is an extremely heartbreaking loss for me! I love you, Mongo! You fought one hell of a battle! Rest in peace, my friend!”
Fellow Four Horsemen member Arn Anderson also reflected on McMichael’s wrestling career, acknowledging his challenges and determination: “Here’s a guy that came into our business, was an All-Pro football player in the NFL with no formal training, and was immediately put in a main event match... So, the people who are critical of ‘Mongo’ and his ability to wrestle... I welcome you to try that.”
