Linda McMahon named U.S. Secretary of Education
President-Elect Donald Trump has picked Linda McMahon to be the Secretary of Education when he takes office again in January 2025. McMahon served as head of the Small Business Administration in Trump’s previous term and worked for his SuperPAC since then. She previously ran for the U.S. Senate in Connecticut, where she was accused of falsely claiming to have a college degree in education.
In 1989, McMahon, then an executive at World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), authored a memo instructing a company vice president to inform Dr. George Zahorian, a physician associated with WWE, about potential legal issues he might encounter. This memo later referred to as the "tip-off" letter, became a point of contention during McMahon's 2010 U.S. Senate campaign. Critics argued that the memo indicated she had prior knowledge of an ongoing federal investigation into Dr. Zahorian's distribution of steroids to WWE wrestlers, including her husband, Vince McMahon. The controversy centered on whether Linda McMahon's actions were an attempt to interfere with or undermine the federal investigation.
In an October 2024 filing in Maryland court, five anonymous plaintiffs, identified as "John Does," claim Melvin Phillips groomed and abused them as minors, alleging WWE, TKO Group, and the McMahons were aware but failed to protect them. The suit contends WWE prioritized its image over safety.
Recently, it has been officially announced that the McMahons have been separated for a while.
