Phil Hickerson Dies at Age 79
Phil Hickerson, a longtime Memphis wrestling star and Tennessee radio personality, died May 20 at his home. He was 79. A celebration of life is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, May 30, at Sanford Hill Baptist Church in Henderson, Tennessee, with visitation starting at 11 a.m., according to his obituary.
Hickerson was a fixture in the Tennessee wrestling territory, working for NWA Mid-America, the Continental Wrestling Association and the United States Wrestling Association. He was best known as a tag team wrestler, including his run with Dennis Condrey as the Bicentennial Kings. Hickerson also held singles gold, including the AWA International Heavyweight Championship and the CWA Heavyweight Championship.
Later in his career, Hickerson worked under the name PY Chu-Hi in the USWA and also toured Japan with All Japan Pro Wrestling in 1988. After leaving the ring, he worked as a radio DJ in Jackson, Tennessee. Hickerson was inducted into the Memphis Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1995.
