Five years ago yesterday, I attended ROH Free Enterprise in Baltimore to see Nick Aldis. Around this time, watching the NWA had rekindled my interest in pro wrestling, and this show—right before COVID—became a key step toward what eventually became DMV Wrestling News. Looking back, it’s amazing to realize I’ve since met or gotten to know several wrestlers who were part of that event, including PCO, Kaun, Moses, Flip Gordon, Alex Shelley, Brian Johnson, Cheeseburger, Danhausen, The Blue Meanie, Jay Lethal, Rhett Titus, and Leon St. Giovanni.
After COVID, my first independent wrestling show was MCW's Seasons Beatings 2021, where my daughter and I met Lio Rush, Dak Draper, and Quinn McKay after the show. That night, she also became a huge fan of Moses and Lio Rush.
Attending MCW shows throughout most of 2022 ultimately led me to launch DMV Wrestling News in September and the podcast Belts, Bumps, and Barbed Wire in December. Since then, I’ve regularly attended wrestling shows and fan conventions across seven states (VA, WV, DC, MD, DE, PA, NJ) with 15 different promotions (MCW, 1CW, 3LW, FWA, CZW, AAW, MFPW, AXW, NWA, NJPW, PYD, ACW, DCW, MATW, and VCW). That list continues to grow. I’ve also had the opportunity to be a member of credentialed media at New Japan and NWA events and have developed positive relationships with several independent promotions as well as AEW.
I’m proud of the work I’ve done, especially the tribute podcasts after the passing of Jay Briscoe, Brandon Holman, and Jermaine Robinson. I’m pleased with the growth of the website and email list, but what means the most is hearing from wrestlers and promotions about how much they appreciate having their results posted and their shows promoted. It’s rewarding to know the site helps not just fans but the people in the business as well. I’ve even had wrestlers express their appreciation through hugs—something that never stops meaning a lot.
One of the most humbling moments for me was when a wrestler, who has only recently debuted but was still a student at the time, gave me a laptop to help keep the podcast going and make running the site easier. That kind of generosity and belief in what I’m doing meant the world to me and reinforced why I want to keep growing DMV Wrestling News.
