Fray Tormenta, born Sergio Gutiérrez Benítez in 1945 in San Agustín Metzquititlán, Mexico, faced significant challenges in his early life, including struggles with addiction and crime. In search of redemption, he went through rehab, joined a seminary, and became a priest, studying in Rome and Spain before returning to Mexico.
Inspired by the film *El señor Tormenta*, which depicts a priest who wrestles to support an orphanage, Fray Tormenta, meaning *Friar Storm* in English, decided to follow a similar path. He trained diligently in wrestling while maintaining his priestly duties. Despite his dual identity being revealed, his fame grew, leading to international wrestling opportunities.
During his 23-year wrestling career, Fray Tormenta leveraged his platform to support his orphanage, “La Casa Hogar de los Cachorros de Fray Tormenta.” His efforts positively impacted over 2,000 children, many of whom later achieved success in various professions.
Fray Tormenta’s legacy extends beyond his wrestling achievements. His commitment to helping others was a central theme of his life and inspired the 2006 film *Nacho Libre*, starring Jack Black, which brought his story to a global audience.
After retiring from wrestling, Fray Tormenta continued his charity work, reinforcing his dedication to serving others. He also made a cameo in *Nacho Libre*, further cementing his status as an inspiring figure.
Unfortunately, Fray Tormenta's story took a difficult turn. Now 79 years old, he suffers from herpes zoster, a condition caused by the same virus as chickenpox. This illness has led to vision loss and other health issues. While not life-threatening, it can be extremely painful, with symptoms including fever, sensitivity to light and touch, headaches, fatigue, burning sensations, and rashes.
Despite these challenges, Fray Tormenta remains determined. He continues to sell signed masks and other collectibles through his social media and maintains communication with the press and his followers. Specialists have advised that timely treatment could alleviate the infection and reduce complications. He initially opened a car wash to fund his treatments but had to close it due to worsening discomfort.
Additionally, on August 3, a charity event was held in Fray Tormenta's honor at Arena Rey Bucanero in the State of Mexico. The event featured notable wrestlers such as Último Guerrero, Atlantis, Volador Jr., Solar, Blue Panther, and Stuka, among others.
