Happy 3:16 Day!
Every March 16, wrestling fans mark 3:16 Day, a nod to one of the most famous promos in pro wrestling history. The phrase traces back to the King of the Ring 1996 tournament, where Stone Cold Steve Austin defeated Jake Roberts in the final. After the match, Austin grabbed the microphone and delivered the line that would follow him for the rest of his career: “Austin 3:16 says I just whipped your ass.”
The promo helped propel Austin into the main event scene in WWE and became one of the defining moments of the Attitude Era. The black Austin 3:16 shirt went on to become one of the best selling shirts the company ever produced, and the phrase itself became shorthand for the rebellious character that would soon sit at the center of the promotion’s biggest boom period.
Today the date has turned into an informal holiday among wrestling fans. Clips of the promo circulate every year, fans post photos of their old Austin shirts, and promotions often acknowledge the day online. It remains one of the rare moments in wrestling where a single line from a post match interview became part of the culture of the entire business.
