Steve "Mongo" McMichael, a versatile athlete, made significant contributions both on the football field and in the wrestling ring. Here’s a concise overview:
In his football career, McMichael played college football for the University of Texas Longhorns. He then played as a defensive tackle in the NFL, spending the majority of his career with the Chicago Bears from 1981 to 1993. A key member of the legendary 1985 Bears team, he helped them win Super Bowl XX. Known for his toughness and tenacity, McMichael was a fan favorite.
After retiring from football, McMichael transitioned to professional wrestling. He joined World Championship Wrestling (WCW) in the mid-1990s. McMichael teamed up with other wrestlers, including Ric Flair, Arn Anderson, and Chris Benoit, forming the "Four Horsemen" stable. McMichael also had a stint in the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE) in the mid-1990s.
Despite battling ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), McMichael received a well-deserved honor. In 2024, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Due to his health condition, the induction ceremony took place at his home, with his bust unveiled on a video screen at the Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.
