WCW’s 1991 Great American Bash Shakes Things Up in Baltimore
34 years ago today - on July 14, 1991 - World Championship Wrestling presented The Great American Bash at the Baltimore Arena in Baltimore, Maryland. It was a night shaped as much by absence as by action.
Just weeks earlier, Ric Flair had been fired following a contract dispute and stripped of the WCW World Heavyweight Title. With Flair gone and the original championship belt still in his possession, WCW was forced to rework its plans and crown a new champion without its most iconic star.
In the main event, Lex Luger defeated Barry Windham in a steel cage match to win the vacant title. After the victory, Luger shockingly turned heel, delivering a piledriver to Windham at the direction of Harley Race. The celebration ended abruptly, and Luger’s alliance with Race and bodyguard Mr. Hughes set the tone for his new role as WCW’s top villain.
Elsewhere on the card, Nikita Koloff defeated Sting in a hard-hitting Russian Chain Match, and P.N. News teamed with Bobby Eaton to win a scaffold match against Steve Austin and Terrance Taylor. The show also included a wild mixed tag team cage match where Rick Steiner and Missy Hyatt took on Arn Anderson and Paul E. Dangerously.
The night may not have gone as originally planned, but it still delivered memorable moments, surprising turns, and a new WCW World Champion.
