Indy News

  • Saturday night in Hollywood, MD, MCW held an Autumn Armageddon event. WWE Hall of Famer Tito Santana was there for a meet & greet. No results have been published yet, but videos posted on Facebook by MCW and wrestlers indicate that Mandy Leon retained her belt over Gia Scott, that the Sigma Males didn’t win the triple threat tag team match they were in, and that Kekoa apparently lost to King McBride due to (no surprise) outside intereference. There was a change to the main event lineup as well.

  • Earlier this past week, EWA Wrestling announced their Rage in the Cage 2023 in January at the Bel Air Armory.

Wrestlers

  • Buff Bagwell will be at MCW Autumn Armageddon in Joppa, MD this Saturday (October 15). He will be there in character for his Mister Bagwell’s Neighborhood gimmick.

  • Lio Rush announced that he would be participating in a MLW event in Philadelphia at the former ECW Arena on October 30.

  • At Friday’s AEW Dark taping in DC, wrestlers familiar to indy fans in the DMV were in action. They included Alex Odin, Papadon, Gia Scott, Joe Keys, and Action Andretti.

  • The Boogeyman, a.k.a. Marty Wright, made an appearance Saturday at Squared Circle Collectibles in Winchester, VA.

  • Ethan Page was at 2nd Chance Toys in Pasadena, MD Saturday for a meet and greet and to film an episode of his Toy Hunt Vlog.

  • As mentioned previously, Tito Santana was at MCW Autumn Armageddon in Hollywood, MD.

National/Regional

  • AEW was in DC last week for AEW Dynamite and AEW Rampage/Battle of the Belts IV. Additionally, an AEW Dark taping Friday night included some familiar names to local fans.

KAYFABE THEATER: The Gladiators vs. The Mulkey Brothers - The Gorilla Position

I noted last week that Mike Mooneyham, a friend of mine, had started a 4-part series on the Mulkey Brothers (Bill and Randy) that I gave the title, "Mulkeymania is Running Wild”, which was based on something Jim Cornette said.

In part two this week, Mooneyham includes a quote about Cornette from Bill Mulkey:

"We owe everything to Cornette. I say it every day. He is probably the coolest and most generous person in professional wrestling. We couldn’t have asked for anyone better."

Mooneyham’s column talks about the bumps that the Mulkeys took, especially Randy, as they worked as “enhancement talent” in the ring. This includes a mention of Cornette’s tennis racket being used as a weapon against them.

The column focuses on the fact that the Mulkeys were called to Atlanta for a TV taping in 1987 after they worked a show in Tampa. Right before it was time for their match, booker Dusty Rhodes let them in on a secret… they were going to win a match “accidentally” that would send them to the Crockett Cup tournament at The Baltimore Arena.

That day in Atlanta they defeated the masked team of The Gladiators, which included George South and Gary Royal. Mooneyham talks to South, who tells him that the pairing was billed as West Coast champions, but without belts.

The Mulkeys went on to lose in the first round of the Crockett Cup to Todd Champion and Denny Brown.

You can see the match they won in the video below:
