Wrestlers

Saturday, WWE HOFer Barry Windham was scheduled to make an appearance in Winchester, VA. However, that appearance was cancelled due to “an urgent matter” and we learn today that Windham had a heart attack late Friday while traveling through the Atlanta airport and is now in intensive care. Thoughts and prayers to Barry Windham and his family.

Indy News

1CW Pro Wrestling and CCW both hosted wrestling in Houston, DE this weekend. 1CW held their Christmas Chaos event while, on the same card, CCW hosted their Legacy event.

MCW hosted Breakthrough in Joppa, MD (results are here) and prior to the event members of their roster made appearances at the grand re-opening of Joppa Grand Market.

CZW held Limelight 12 in Havre de Grace on Sunday evening.

Virginia Championship Wrestling held their Tidings of Destruction event in Norfolk, VA that included their Destruction Derby match. Ron Simmons made an appearance at the event.

CNN recently reported on indy wrestler Daniel Richards, whose current persona is The Progressive Liberal. The report indicates that the heat he is getting from fans is intensifying and that he has had a knife pulled on him, rocks thrown at him, and a lady try to set his trunks on fire. All of these acts and all of the threats he has documented are reprehensible.

Many will point to the current political environment as a new low in rhetorical excesses. While they may be more widely reported due to technological advances, political rhetoric has been at the bottom of the barrel from the beginning - just look at the election of 1800 between John Adams and Thomas Jefferson as proof. If you want more examples be sure to check out my friend K.P. Burke’s history podcast - American Loser.

Like I said before, I condemn all the people using heated rhetoric and employing violence against Daniel Richards. However, wrestling also has a long history of fans attacking the wrestlers.

There was the legendary Hatpin Mary in the 1950s - “a bespectacled old woman who liked to stick wrestlers she did not like with a hatpin”.

If you saw the Jim Crockett Promotions episode of Inside the Territories last week, you saw Arn Anderson and other wrestlers discussing a match at The Omni in Atlanta where fans were rushing the ring.

There are many other examples of fans being violent towards heels, including vandalism and damage to the cars belonging to wrestlers they didn’t like.

The one event that stands out to me happened in Greenville, SC at the old Greenville Memorial Auditorium. Ole Anderson was returning to the dressing room after a tag team match when an 80-year old fan stabbed him with a hawkbill knife. Ole reportedly underwent four hours of surgery to have tendons repaired and received “dozens” of stitches.

I’m not downplaying the Progressive Liberal’s story, but I just want to add some historical context. Another wrestler, Sam Adonis, adopted a pro-Trump gimmick when he was wrestling in lucha libre in Mexico to rile up the fans there after Donald Trump was elected president.

To close out this week’s editions of The Ringpost, here’s a podcast clip from Jim Cornette, himself a progressive liberal, discussing Daniel Richards:
