WWE’s AAA Deal Shakes Up Lucha Libre
WWE announced its acquisition of Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide just hours before Night 1 of WrestleMania 41, marking a major move to expand its presence in Latin America.
The purchase gives WWE control of AAA’s video library, talent contracts, and event operations. AAA will continue to operate under its name in Mexico, but key decisions will now be made through WWE’s offices.
The acquisition could pose a setback for AEW, which had a working relationship with AAA that allowed crossover appearances and talent sharing. With WWE’s emphasis on exclusivity, AEW's access to top lucha talent may now be sharply limited.
There is also uncertainty around the future of longtime AAA booker and on-screen figure Konnan. He has a complicated history with WWE, and his influence behind the scenes could be reduced. The fate of Alberto El Patrón is similarly unclear. A former WWE star with ongoing involvement in AAA, his past legal issues and public controversies may not align with WWE’s current corporate image.
Terms of the deal have not been disclosed.
